What to do if Rumsfeld calls you for a meeting:

As many of you know, the Department of Defense (DoD) has been for the last year working to undermine the civil service protections of 750,000 civilian employees that work for them. This administration initiative, called the National Security Personnel System (NSPS), is a straight forward attempt to bust the unions that represent workers at DoD. The administration overall game plan is to do the same in each government agency once the DoD initiative concludes.

We have been working with some 36 plus unions to fight against the imposition of the NSPS program and have just concluded a "meet and confer" process with Pentagon leaders. However, it appears that Secretary Rumsfield is now trying to do an end run around the national union leadership. He has called a meeting for June 23rd in his office to which he is inviting select union leaders from states in which there are key military installations. If you get such a request we ask that you call us ASAP and do not respond to them until after we have had an opportunity to discuss. Please call either Ken Grossinger at 202-637-5393 or Byron Charlton at 202-637- 5290.
